Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab, St Maddoes churchyard, Perth and Kinross In 1833, the antiquary James Skene noted this red sandstone cross-slab lying flat on the ground within St Maddoes churchyard. The stone is now on display in Perth Museum. Carved in relief, the ringed cross has a square central boss, with panels of alternating interlace patterns decorating the shaft. Surrounding the cross are ferocious biting animals, possibly hunting hounds or wolves. Over 200 Pictish symbol stones are known in Scotland, employing a variety of symbols. Carvings drawing on the real world, such as objects and animals, are found in conjunction with detailed abstract designs and fantastic creatures. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
