Scope and Content Fireplace on west wall of the first floor of the east range, Falkland Palace, Fife Falkland Palace was remodelled in 1537-41 for King James V (died 1542). The south range dates from his reign, as do the exteriors of the earlier buildings. The east and north ranges were probably both built for King James IV (1488-1513). The first floor of the east range is thought to have contained a suite of ceremonial rooms like those at the Palace of Holyrood House, or else an unusually large apartment for the king. This fireplace is on the west wall. In each of his two marriage contracts with French princesses, King James V promised Falkland Palace as the queen's residence should he die first. His remodelling of the palace was probably intended to impress his future wife and her family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
