Scope and Content cf PAs 88, 89, 92, 93, 94 this is one of six albums associated with the Strang family. Brown imitation leather cloth bound album, gold lined on the front cover, inscribed 'Photographs'. Album of photographs by GWW, EG, JV, DE, JP, AI and Rettie family who seem to have been early amateur photographers of some skill, possibly the family of Middleton Rettie, Advocate at Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh in 1875 and at Great King Street in 1884. The album includes a "compass sketch of Dunearn", 6 ins to 1 mile, coloured, and signed WJK Rettie, 1887, and pictures of members of the family spearing flounders from a small boat. There is a brochure addressed to Rev GR Brett, at the Rectory, St Mary Thwaite, Bungay, Suffolk, giving particulars of a house in Essex, "Wakes Colne Place" near Colchester, to be sold on 15 July 1887, the property of the son of the late Edward Brett. It describes gardens which included brick built melon pits, exceptionally fine old forest trees and choice fruit trees in full bearing. The house was "located in a favoured district for Field Sports, within easy reach of several Packs of Hounds and near good fishing in the rivers Colne and Stour - a very attractive opportunity...for the immediate occupation of a family of position."
