Scope and Content Painted decoration on north wall, Chapel, second floor of south range, Falkland Palace, Falkland, Fife Falkland Palace was remodelled in 1537-41 for King James V (died 1542). The south range dates from his reign, as do the exteriors of the earlier buildings. The east and north ranges were probably both built for King James IV (1488-1513). To make up for its lack of windows, the north wall was decorated with tromp d'oeil work - painted architectural features that appear three-dimensional to the viewer - for King Charles I's visit in 1633. Falkland Palace's late 19th-century alterations and restorations were carried out for John Crighton-Stuart, 3rd Marquis of Bute, who became Hereditary Keeper in 1887.
