Scope and Content Mercat cross, High Street, Pittenweem Pittenweem became a burgh of barony dependant on its Augustinian Priory in the 15th century, and a royal burgh in 1541. Appearing in records in 1228, its port harboured a thriving fishing fleet, and was home to merchants trading with the Low Countries. The mercat cross, an 18th-century head possibly mounted on a 16th-century shaft, has been moved from its site in the marketplace and installed against the wall of the Tolbooth.
