Scope and Content West side of St John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, Marygate, Pittenweem, Fife St John the Evangelist Episcopal Church was built in 1805 in a simple Gothic style. A north porch and an east sanctuary were added in 1869-70 when the interior was remodelled to face east. Robert Lorimer supervised its refurbishing in 1924. The structure at the south end (right) is the small south sanctuary superseded when a the larger east sanctuary was built. A bishop's hat or mitre is mounted on the apex of its roof. Gothic architecture, the distinctive pointed-arched style of the later Middle Ages, was revived in the late 18th century. It remained popular for public buildings, especially churches, well into the 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
