Scope and Content Great King Street, Edinburgh Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the grand central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place, which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. These single three-storeyed houses form the link between the taller central and end blocks of the terrace, and were designed as homes of quality and style for important and wealthy residents. Residents of the street have included the author, Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859), famous for his opium eating and articles in Blackwood's Magazine, and the historical painter, Sir William Allan (d.1850) who was appointed as the Queen's Limner in Scotland.
