Scope and Content Aerial view of Fochabers, Grampian Fochabers lies c.9.5km south-west of Buckie. Founded a burgh of barony in 1598-9, the town was moved by the Duke of Gordon when he built his new castle, and 'it offended the Duke's improving principles and detracted from the splendour of his new palace'. This aerial view shows the new planned village of Fochabers, which was designed by John Baxter and begun in 1776. Like most planned settlements, the streets form a 'grid-iron' pattern of squares and rectangles. In the centre of the town is the former Bellie Church, designed and built by John Baxter in 1798, with a tall clock tower above a three-bayed pedimented entrance porch. It is now used as a shop and museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
