Scope and Content Rear, High Street, Falkland, Fife Falkland began as a village overlooked by a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle became a royal hunting residence in 1437 and in 1458 Falkland, now a town, received burgh status so it could support the court. After 1700, weaving was its main industry. This is the rear of some of the High Street's old houses before modernisation. The roof of the nearest house, 'Balmbae', is thatched. The rest have pantiles imported from the Netherlands as ballast or, in the 18th century, made in nearby Dunshelt. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
