Scope and Content Township, kiln and field system at Shenval, Highland The ruins of this township lie some 900m west of Brin Rock, on a south-facing hillside. In 1874, the Ordnance Survey Name Book note that only three buildings were still thatched in this settlement, though the roofing was in poor repair. At least seven buildings made up this small township, a mixture of dwellings, byres and a kiln probably for drying grain. Most of the buildings have been reduced to low stony banks, though the three larger buildings in the centre are those noted in 1874. Township lands were formed jointly by a number of tenants, each with a separate farmsteading. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for grazing stock.
