Scope and Content Slezer view of Falkland, Fife Falkland began as a village overlooked by a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle became a royal hunting residence in 1437 and in 1458 Falkland, now a town, received burgh status so it could support the court. After 1700, weaving was its main industry. This view by John Slezer shows Falkland in the 1670s. Though no-longer in royal use by this time, Falkland Palace (right) dominates the townscape. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
