Scope and Content Cross-Wynd, Back Wynd, Falkland, Fife Falkland began as a village overlooked by a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle became a royal hunting residence in 1437 and in 1458 Falkland, now a town, received burgh status so it could support the court. After 1700, weaving was its main industry. Many of the houses on Cross Wynd have crow-stepped gables and forestairs leading the first-floor entrance, typical of the 17th and 18th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
