Scope and Content 1899 photograph of High Street, Falkland, Fife Falkland began as a village overlooked by a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle became a royal hunting residence in 1437 and in 1458 Falkland, now a town, received burgh status so it could support the court. After 1700, weaving was its main industry. This photograph was taken by Lady Henrietta Gilmour Montrose in 1899 at a time when the street was still cobbled. The trail of manure to the lower right is a reminder that horses were still the main mode of transport. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
