Scope and Content Mid 19th century watercolour of mercat cross, Inverkeithing, Fife Inverkeithing became a royal burgh in the 12th century. Its economy was based on trade. A new distillery and ironworks saved it from decline in the late 18th century. Its key 20th-century industries were papermaking and ship-building and breaking. The original cross consisted of an octagonal shaft topped by a capital bearing the arms of the powerful Douglas family and of King Robert III. This suggests that it was erected in 1398 when Robert's heir, David, Duke of Rothesay, married Mary Douglas. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
