Scope and Content Pre-restoration view of frontage of Greyfriars Convent (Inverkeithing Museum), Queen Street, Inverkeithing, Fife Greyfriars Convent, a House of Franciscan Friars, was founded about 1350. In 1559 it was sold to John Swinton who probably converted the old guesthouse into a house for himself, and quarried stone from the other buildings. It now serves as a museum. This is the house before its 'restoration' in 1932-4. The stonework is still harled - as it probably had been since it was built - and two forestairs lead to first-floor entrances. Most Scottish masonry from the Middle Ages to the 18th century was harled - covered with rough-cast cement to protect it from the weather. This would probably have been painted using locally available pigments. The results could be quite colourful. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
