Scope and Content Mercat cross, Inverkeithing, Fife Inverkeithing became a royal burgh in the 12th century. Its economy was based on trade. A new distillery and ironworks saved it from decline in the late 18th century. Its key 20th-century industries were papermaking and ship-building and breaking. The cross was moved from High Street to its position on Townhall Street in 1799. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
