SC 394875

Description Meigle Pictish cross slab fragment (Side, No.5)

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 394875

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 25236

Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab at Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows the left side of a cross slab found in 1858 during the dismantling of Templehall malt-kiln. It is carved with a mirror-case symbol and a Pictish Beast. Both of these symbols are common in Pictish carvings of this date. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
