Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This grave-slab is carved on one side with two intertwined beasts, two animals above an unknown object and a rectangle formed from twelve raised bosses. A roundel is surrounded by two animals with a human figure in their mouths and contains seven bosses. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
