Scope and Content Crofting townships of Achiltibuie and Polglass, Ross and Cromarty, Highland Achiltibuie and Polglass are two adjoining crofting townships situated at the north-west extremity of the Coigach peninsula in Wester Ross, to the north of Loch Broom. Most of the peninsula comprises mountain and bog with settlement being confined to the coast. This aerial view shows a series of crofts. Each croft comprises a dwelling with a narrow strip of land running from left to right down to the coast. The wall that runs from the bottom left corner and converges with the road at the top of the image marks the boundary between the enclosed crofts and open pasture. The crofting townships of Achiltibuie and Polglass date from the early 19th century, following a reorganisation of the Cromarty Estate that saw the creation of series of crofting townships and large tracts of sheep pasture. The remains of a pre-crofting community have also been identified at Achiltibuie. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
