Scope and Content Aerial view of Dere Street, cultivation remains and an enclosure at Whitton Edge, Scottish Borders Dere Street is the name given to the Roman road linking north-east England and south-east Scotland. For much of its length Dere Street has remained a routeway, and can be seen here, between the walls, reused as a Drovers road, with, on the far side, the Roman gravel pits dug to provide material for the carriageway. In Scotland, roads were built by the Romans to link their forts and allow rapid movement of soldiers. Built by soldiers, a Roman road typically consisted of a layer of large cobbles topped with a tightly packed layer of small stones and gravel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
