Scope and Content Newton Castle, tower-house, Perth and Kinross Newton tower-house stands within its policies on the west side of Blairgowrie. The main block of this well-preserved Z-plan tower-house stands three storeys and an attic in height. The tower-house is viewed here from the north-east. The tower-house has a stair-wing on the east side of the main block and a round-tower corbelled square on the west (left). The entrance-doorway is protected by a horizontal gun loop. Tower-houses were built in Scotland between the 14th and 17th centuries and were one of the simplest forms of fortified residence. A Z-plan tower-house had towers placed at diagonally opposite corners of the main building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
