Scope and Content Grave-slab of Sir James Ewart, St Mary's Parish Church, Marketgate, Crail, Fife This grave-slab is thought to commemorate Sir James Ewart, a chaplain of the collegiate church between 1544 and 1555, who died some time between 1555 and 1559. This grave-slab bears a Calvary Cross, a Latin cross mounted on three steps. Attached to each arm of the cross is a nail to represent Christ's passion. Beneath is a chalice and star-shaped symbol of holy wafer. James Ewart was one of the last chaplains who held office at St Mary's. In 1559, John Knox read his famous sermon in Crail against Catholicism, sparking the rioting which ultimately led to the destruction of St Andrews Cathedral. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
