Description General view from south across harbour

Date 1967

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 388543

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content View across harbour towards Customs House, No 35 Shoregate, Crail, Fife Crail was created a royal burgh in 1310, with a royal castle just to the east of the burgh. Fishing was the main industry in the town throughout its history, but this declined during the 19th century, and the town now relies on tourism. This shows the Customs House (right) in Shoregate beside the harbour. Built in the late 17th century, it served as a warehouse on its ground and attic floors. It has crowstepped gables and is harled and whitewashed to protect the stone from the salty air. Shoregate is the oldest street in Crail and leads up the from the harbour to the High Street. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland in c.1967, the Customs House was essential for monitoring all imports and exports into and out of the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
