Scope and Content Bishop's Bridge, Ceres, Fife Bishop's Bridge was built in the 17th century to span the Craighall or Ceres Burn. It was probably named after Archbishop Sharp who had just crossed it when a party of horseman who had originally gathered to attack the sheriff-depute, hacked him to death. This shows the 17th-century bridge (left) overlooked by St Johns Masonic Lodge which was built in 1765. James Sharp (1613-79), Archbishop of St Andrews, was an opponent of the Covenanting movement. His murder in May 1679 sparked off a rebellion which was crushed a month later at the Battle of Bothwell Brig. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
