Scope and Content Rear view of High Street, Anstruther Wester, Fife The High Street contains houses from the 17th and 18th century, most bearing traces of later alterations. This is rear of 2-28 High Street, with the Dreel Burn on the left. Anstruther Wester began as part of a fishing town, becoming a Burgh of Barony in 1541, and a Royal Burgh in the 1580s. A 'mean town' in 1616, it suffered economic damage from the Act of Union in 1707 but recovered in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
