11 Forres Street View from South West of street front

A 27181

Description 11 Forres Street View from South West of street front

Date 1985

Catalogue Number A 27181

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 533063

Scope and Content No 11 Forres Street, Edinburgh Forres Street, a continuous terrace leading up the hill from Moray Place to the northern edge of Charlotte Square in the first New Town, was designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1822 as part of a new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate. No 11, the end block on the east side of the terrace where it meets Moray Place, has giant Doric pilasters, and an extra attic storey above a massive cornice. The first-floor windows are elongated, emphasising the importance of the drawing-room floor. Forres Street was the home of James Syme (1799-1870), one of the finest surgeons of his day who, in 1832, published his 'Principles of Surgery'. He became Professor of Clinical Surgery at Edinburgh University in 1833, and wrote extensively on pathology. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
