Scope and Content Rear elevation of Great Stuart Street, Edinburgh, from the north Great Stuart Street, in two short sections, links the three main spaces - polygon, oval and crescent - of the housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1822. The street was not completed until 1855. The cliff-like backs of the houses in Great Stuart Street have some additions of balconies and balconets to take advantage of the open view to the north over the wooded banks of the Water of Leith, most of which were pleasure grounds for the Moray feuars. The Earl of Moray, in his 'Conditions of Sale' for the development on his estate, resolved 'to preserve the beauty of the bank on the south side of the river, and to reserve the same as pleasure ground for the benefit of himself and his feuars'.
