Scope and Content William Playfair's plan of the gallery floor, St Stephen's Church, Edinburgh St Stephen's Church, at the north end of St Vincent Street, was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1826 and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. Playfair's plan of the church is basically square, but the interior is octagonal. The gallery, arranged around five sides of the octagon, is supported from below on columns. The main entrance in the south tower opens directly into the gallery. The church, designed for a congregation of 1,600, was found to be too large for its existing congregation in 1955. To save it from demolition, a reinforced concrete deck was inserted at gallery level, turning the main part of the church into a lower hall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
