Scope and Content Doorway, St Stephen's Church, Edinburgh St Stephen's Church, at the north end of St Vincent Street, was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1826 and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. The entrance to the church is through this massive tunnel porch, reached by a broad flight of stone steps between giant inverted ornamental brackets. This main entry gives access to the gallery, floored over in 1955 to form a new ground-floor level. Parishioners, having come all the way down Howe Street and St Vincent Street, next had to ascend the huge flight of steps in order to get into the church; then, unless they sat in the gallery where they had arrived, had to go downstairs to their pews.
