Scope and Content Statue of Ralph Erskine, St-Andrews-Erskine Church, Queen Anne Street, Dunfermline, Fife St-Andrews-Erskine Church was built as a Burgher Chapel by David Whyte of Edinburgh to plans by Alexander McFarlane, also of Edinburgh. This statue of the Reverend Ralph Erskine, a founding father of the Burghers, as well as a keen amateur violinist. The Burghers formed in 1747 from part of the Scottish Secession Church. They defended the morality of taking the Burgess Oath necessary to become burgesses (full citizens of a burgh) even though the oath seemed to support established religion.
