Scope and Content Turkish Baths, Carnegie Centre, Dunfermline, Fife The Carnegie Centre was built in 1901-5 by Hippolyte J Blanc of Edinburgh as a sports centre and swimming pool. It was modified and extended by James Parr and Partners in 1979-84. The Turkish Baths are designed to in Orientalist style so that the bathers might feel that they were enjoying a taste of the exotic East. 'Orientalist' is the term used for the work of Western artist, poets and writers portraying a romanticised and often decadent version of the Middle East owing more to the Arabian Nights than to reality.
