Description Side elevation & chimney

Catalogue Number SC 383762

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of F 11305

Scope and Content View of side elevation and chimney of Carnegie Baths, 46 Pilmuir Street, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline was created a royal burgh between 1124 and 1127 by David I, and grew up around the 12th-century abbey and royal residence. It became a centre for linen manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries. This shows the side elevation of the Carnegie Centre or Baths which was built 1901-5 to designs by Hippolyte Jean Blanc. Renovated in 1979-84 by James Parr & Partners, many original features still survive, including the Moorish-style tiled Turkish baths. Built as a gift from the Dunfermline-born philanthropist and businessman Andrew Carnegie (1837-1910), these baths replace earlier baths which stood nearby. Other gifts included a library (1881), Pittencrieff Park (1903) and a School of Music. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
