Scope and Content St Margaret's Cave, Bruce Street, Dunfermline, Fife St Margaret's Cave is associated with Margaret, queen of King Malcolm Canmore (1058-93). According to a local tradition recorded in the mid 19th century, she used the cave for her private devotions. This shows the cave before it was covered by a car park. Traces of carving, including a stone bench and bar holes, survive on the inside. The cave is now only accessible through a tunnel. St Margaret (c.1045-93) was a half-German Anglo-Saxon princess who fled to Scotland after 1066 and married King Malcolm Canmore. Her good works, including continental-style church 'reform', helped strengthen the Canmore dynasty. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
