Scope and Content Aerial view of Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline grew up in medieval times around an important residence of the kings of Scotland, encouraged by St Margaret's foundation of a Benedictine Abbey in around 1070s. Its status as a royal burgh was recognised in 1555. Little remains of the medieval town, destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1624. Damask weaving was introduced to the burgh in 1718. From then until 1918, Dunfermline was the main manufacturing centre for table-linen in Britain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
