Scope and Content Drawing showing floor plans of Frater Hall (Refectory) and the Palace, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows plans for the ground, first and second floors in the frater hall and palace. The palace (left) contained accommodation for important, usually royal, visitors to the abbey, plus a kitchen and cellars for storage. The frater hall (centre) held the monks' dining hall and more storage. To the right is the monks' dormitory and latrine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
