Scope and Content View of Frater Hall (Refectory) and Gatehouse, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and a royal guest house. The frater hall (right) formed the southern side of the cloister where the monks would spend their days. The frater hall contained the refectory at the upper level with storage undercrofts below. To the left is the gatehouse which visitors had to pass through. The whole precinct was surrounded by a high wall, serving both as a means of seclusion and defence.
