Scope and Content Tarrasfoot, tileworks, Dumfries and Galloway The tileworks at Tarrasfoot were built for the Duke of Buccleuch at the beginning of the 19th century and continued producing field-drainage tiles until the late 1960s. Clay was extracted from a pit to the south of the tileworks and shaped into field-drainage tiles. They were transferred to the drying shed, seen here, for a period of time before being fired in the kiln. Using local deposits of clay, nine tileworks were established in eastern Dumfriesshire to manufacture field-drainage tiles for farmers making improvements to their land.
