Scope and Content Tarrasfoot, tileworks, Dumfries and Galloway The tileworks at Tarrasfoot were built for the Duke of Buccleuch at the beginning of the 19th century and continued producing field-drainage tiles until the late 1960s. The process of firing tiles caused considerable damage to the kilns and they were replaced on several occasions. This is the last kiln to be constructed at Tarrasfoot. Built from brick, the kiln contained two chambers set to either side of the chimney. Using local deposits of clay, nine tileworks were established in eastern Dumfriesshire to manufacture field-drainage tiles for farmers making improvements to their land.
