Scope and Content Blackwoodridge Quarries, limeworks, Dumfries and Galloway There are several outcrops of Carboniferous limestones at Blackwoodridge which have been quarried since at least the mid-19th century. A substantial stone-built kiln-bank still survives beside one of the quarries. Limestone was fired in kilns and this view shows a detail of the inside of one of the draw-arches. The resulting lime was spread on fields to improve the fertility of the agricultural ground. It was also used for building and industrial purposes. Evidence from old maps would suggest that extraction of limestone from quarries in south-west Scotland has taken place since at least the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
