Scope and Content Carved stone effigy, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This slab is carved with a figure wearing armour. His head rests on a pillow and there is a hound at his feet. The identity of the figure is unknown, though he was portrayed with a moustache and plaited beard. He carries a spear, sword and shield. This slab was formerly in the Abbey Church but was moved to the safety of the Abbey Museum (No 98). The damage to the figure's head was caused by vandalism during the 19th century. It is carved in the Iona school style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
