Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 382725

Scope and Content Grave-slab from Wauchope old parish church, Dumfries and Galloway Part of the medieval church of Wauchope still stands within the grounds of the old parish church. Several pieces of medieval sculpture including grave-slabs and stone mouldings have been recovered from the vicinity. This recumbent grave-slab was incorporated into the fabric of the church at Wauchope but has since been removed for safe keeping. The slab has chamfered edges (cut at a diagonal angle) and has the outline of a sword incised on its face. The earliest record of a church at Wauchope is 1220, when the payment of the vicar's annual stipend was agreed at five marks. The church was partially demolished following the absorption of Wauchope into the parish of Langholm in 1703. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
