Scope and Content Medieval grave-slab from Wauchope old parish church, Dumfries and Galloway Part of the medieval church of Wauchope still stands within the grounds of the old parish church. Several pieces of medieval sculpture including grave-slabs and stone mouldings have been found within the churchyard. Incised on the face of the slab is a ringed cross which is of a type known as a Calvary cross. Although the end of the slab is missing, the shaft of the cross may have had a stepped base. The earliest record of a church at Wauchope is 1220, when the payment of the vicar's annual stipend was agreed at five marks. The church was partially demolished following the absorption of Wauchope into the parish of Langholm in 1703. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
