Scope and Content Fragment of an Anglian cross-shaft, Hoddom, Dumfries and Galloway Early Christian sculpture is known from relatively few sites in Dumfries and Galloway, but an important collection of carved fragments has been recovered in area around Hoddom parish church, the site of an early monastery. Clad in a full length mantle and holding a book, this figure represents Christ, a halo rising over his head. He stands before an Anglo-Saxon-style church, with a gable cross and round-headed door. The pair of heads above may represent the sun and moon. Around the 9th century the Angles of Northumbria settled in lowland Scotland and Cumbria. Along with the settlers came churches and monasteries, where finely carved free-standing crosses like this were produced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
