Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John Bell, Kirkbank churchyard, Dumfries and Galloway This gravestone commemorates John Bell, a farmer, who died in 1737. Also interred here are his wife and son. Beneath the effigies of John (left) and his family, the Fall of Man is portrayed. Adam stretches out his hand to accept the Forbidden Fruit which the serpent, coiled around the bough, places in Eve's hand. Emblems of death and mortality flank the scene. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
