Description View of decorated graveslab adjacent to burial enclosure.

Catalogue Number SC 382614

Scope and Content Grave-slab of Adam Fleming, Kirkconnel old parish church, Dumfries and Galloway northothing remains of the old parish church of Kirkconnel, though the burial ground contains numerous 18th-century gravestones and a fine mausoleum. Legend states a pair of late medieval grave-slabs are those of Helen Irving and her lover Adam Fleming. The slab has chamfered edges (cut at a diagonal angle) and has the outline of a sword carved in false relief upon its face. Along one edge it is still possible to read '...FLEMENG' incised in capitals. Sir Walter Scott's 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border' popularised the legend of 'Fair' Helen Irving of Kirkconnel Lea, accidentally killed by her lover's enemy. One tradition holds than Helen was buried in the grave of her lover, Adam Fleming. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
