Plan of a burnt mound at Broomhillbank, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of a burnt mound lie in boggy ground on the east bank of Dinwoodie Green Burn, roughly 1km north-east of Broomhillbank steading. Like other burnt mounds, this one at Broomhillbank is composed of reddish fire-cracked stones, small pieces of charcoal and loose black earth. On plan the mound is crescent-shaped with a hollow opening on the south-west. Burnt mounds are generally considered to be Bronze Age cooking places, usually found near streams or springs. Stones were heated in hearths and used to boil water by plunging them into water-filled troughs or pits. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
