Scope and Content General view of Frenchland tower-house, Dumfries and Galloway Frenchland tower-house lies about 600m north of Hunterheck steading, on the west bank of the Frenchland Burn. Constructed in the late 16th or early 17th century, Frenchland originally comprised a simple oblong tower-house, three storeys high with a parapet. During the 17th century numerous improvements were made, including the construction of a wing on the right. At the invitation of David I, the Yorkshire family of de Brus received the lordship of Annandale around 1124. Many of their vassals and tenants travelled north, such as the French family who held the tenancy of these lands in the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
