Scope and Content View from south-east showing remains of Frenchland, Dumfries and Galloway Situated 1km east of Moffat, Frenchland was erected in the mid-16th century by the French family, who had held land here as tenants of the Bruces since the early 13th century. The original tower-house was extended in the 17th century to form an L-plan. This shows the remains of the three-storeyed tower-house, which had a great hall on the first floor used for entertaining guests. The fireplace opening can still be seen today. Inhabited until 1720, the tower was in reasonable condition as late as 1857. From the 14th century onwards, tower-houses were built either as 'private lodgings' for the laird's own use within a larger castle complex, or as relatively self-contained fortified residences. They became very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
