Scope and Content View of the tower-house, Lochwood, Dumfries and Galloway Situated on a promontory about 200m north of Lochwood steading are the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle, known locally as The Mount, which is partly overlain by the ruins of a late 15th-century tower-house. Only the south-east corner of the tower-house stands any higher than the ground level. The main block of the tower measures 11m by 13m, with a wing projecting on the north side. Principal seat of the Johnstones, Lochwood became a barony in 1542. Feuding with Lord Robert Maxwell, Warden of the Marches, led to Lochwood being burnt in 1585, though restorations had been effected for the stay of James VI in 1592.
