Scope and Content Aerial view of Tinwald motte, Dumfries and Galloway Lying at the southern end of Tinwald are the remains of a ploughed down medieval motte. Such timber and earth castles are the most tangible evidence of the increasing Anglo-Norman influences in 12th-century Scotland. Ploughing has reduced the earthen motte to a mis-shapen mound although the ditch at the base of the mound is clearly visible. Traces of a palisade enclosing an oval bailey can just be seen, outlined by the taller crop (appearing as a lighter line). During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of their lordship as well as fortified residences for themselves and their retainers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
